Iconic Plants of Socotra
Explore Socotra’s rare and otherworldly flora
Socotra Island is globally renowned for its remarkable and alien-looking plant life. Over 37% of its plant species are endemic, meaning they exist nowhere else on Earth. These plants have adapted to the island’s harsh and isolated climate, creating an environment that resembles a scene from another planet.
The most iconic plant is the Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), recognized by its umbrella-shaped canopy and red sap once used as medicine and dye. Another unique species is the Desert Rose (Adenium obesum socotranum), which grows with a bulbous base and vibrant pink flowers.
The island is also home to rare frankincense trees, bottle trees, and a variety of unique succulents. Many of these species grow in rocky highlands, limestone plateaus, and coastal plains, creating a visually surreal and biologically significant landscape.
